About the position

The Nursing Officer of the Day/Patient Flow Coordinator (NOD/PFC) is responsible for managing patient access and bed flow within the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. This role involves overseeing nursing practice across all patient care units, ensuring adherence to safety standards, and providing leadership to nursing staff. The NOD/PFC collaborates with healthcare team members to alleviate barriers to patient movement and is accountable for resource allocation during off-hours. This position is critical for maintaining efficient patient care and operational processes within the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Bed Management System (BMS) to coordinate patient access and bed flow.
  • Oversee nursing practice and care on all patient care units, ensuring adherence to safety standards.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to nursing staff to ensure quality patient care.
  • Assess and analyze patient incidents and employee injuries to improve safety and care delivery.
  • Collaborate with the Administrative Officer of the Day and interdisciplinary team for patient care decisions.
  • Communicate with all departments to maximize efficiency in admissions and transfers.
  • Evaluate bed availability and manage medical administrative functions related to bed control.
  • Attend daily bed huddle meetings and maintain communication with healthcare providers regarding patient flow.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a supervisory role within a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of Bed Management Systems and patient flow management.
