About the position

The Registered Nurse for the ICU Unit at Rivers Health is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to patients in critical condition. This role involves assessing patients, formulating and updating care plans, and ensuring safe and timely nursing practices. The nurse will also engage in patient education, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial assessment of patient.
  • Formulate a plan of care and nursing diagnosis based on the assessment.
  • Revise and update plan of care through continuous monitoring and evaluation of patient.
  • Perform nursing care in a safe and timely manner according to unit specific proficiencies, hospital policies and procedures.
  • Accurate documentation of care.
  • Provide patient education and discharge planning in collaboration with other disciplines.
  • Delegate patient care duties according to the proficiency level of team members while retaining accountability for duties delegated.
  • Assist in education and staff development of professional and nonprofessional personnel and provide technical supervision on the unit.
  • Serve as preceptor to new employees.
  • Evaluate care being delivered and strive to increase quality and efficiency through the hospital-wide interdisciplinary CQI process.
  • Keep Assistant Executive Director/Patient Care Services and/or Risk Management apprised of special concerns regarding quality, cost effective care and risk management issues.
  • Utilize standards of national specialty organizations.
  • Take responsibility for specific projects to ensure departmental compliance to standards of environment of care, management of information, care of patients, and infection control.
  • Note structural and/or equipment damage, request maintenance repairs as necessary and report action to Unit Coordinator.
  • Practice positive customer relations techniques and respect patient privacy rights.
  • Maintain emergency drugs, equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with unit cleanliness.
  • Attend to patient's and family's needs concerning responses to illness event, considering emotional, spiritual, and physical health.
  • Work harmoniously with team members and create a climate conducive to open dialogue and sharing of concerns.
  • Attend educational offerings and maintain a minimum of 24 contact hours annually, along with ACLS and PALS certifications.
  • Safeguard medications and narcotics.
  • Participate in developing and evaluating annual unit goals and objectives.
  • Administer medications safely with appropriate monitoring.
  • Complete all annual competencies for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Cross-train to other units as needed.
  • Demonstrate excellence in customer service skills.
  • Foster an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a school of nursing with current WV license.
  • BCLS required; PALS and ACLS preferred or obtainable within six months.
  • Previous experience in nursing required.
  • One year of nursing experience preferred in critical care area.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in critical care nursing.
  • Additional certifications in ACLS and PALS.
