About the position

The Registered Professional Nurse utilizes the nursing process in diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems through services such as case finding, health teaching, health counseling and provisions of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being. The RN is responsible for execution of the medical regimens prescribed by licensed independent providers authorized to practice at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for the care of patients throughout the lifespan from admission to discharge. Duties will include obtaining the general history and completing a physical and psychosocial assessment of the patient. Additionally, the RN is responsible for the development of nursing care plans, administering prescribed medications and treatments, health education of patients and families, ensuring accurate and thorough documentation, and performing direct patient care within their scope of practice. The RN is responsible for Charge Nurse Duties, as assigned, which include oversight of unit operations and nursing staff functions during an assigned shift. The RN will provide preceptorship to nursing staff orienting to the assigned unit.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and administer (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) prescribed medications.
  • Provide basic bedside care including dressing changes, catheter care, assisting the patient with moving, and taking vital signs.
  • Monitor patients for subtle or sudden changes in ventilation, renal, and cardiac status.
  • Report adverse reactions to treatments or medication.
  • Order, interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to assess a patient's condition.
  • Quickly identify when a patient decompensates and alert the rest of the critical care team.
  • Initiate corrective action when a patient displays adverse symptoms.
  • Monitor and adjust specialized electronic equipment such as cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, and oxygen pumps.
  • Act as a patient advocate, by respecting the basic rights, beliefs, and values of the patient.
  • Communicate essential and appropriate information about a patients' condition to family members and significant others.
  • Provide comfort and end-of-life care.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Current ACLS certification required.
  • Current PALS certification required.
  • TNCC required.
  • Minimum of (2) two years of experience in Critical Care Nursing (Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Department) required.
  • Extensive experience in measuring and interpreting vital signs and levels of consciousness.
  • Advanced knowledge of best practices in patient care.
  • Ability to effectively delegate and work with others.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Available to participate in Performance Improvement/Quality Improvement.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's in nursing preferred.
  • CCRN (Adult) preferred.
  • CEN preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
