About the position

The Domiciliary Mental Health Registered Nurse (RN) at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for providing and leading evidence-based care to patients with psychiatric and mental health conditions. This role emphasizes patient-centered and recovery-oriented care, focusing on the personal growth and development of nursing practice in a domiciliary setting. The RN will engage in therapeutic communication, facilitate psychoeducational groups, and participate in interdisciplinary treatment teams to ensure comprehensive care for veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Provide competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients.
  • Assist in directing nursing education, orientation, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Facilitate shift reports and nurse-led psychoeducational groups.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques.
  • Oversee patient medication management and safety protocols.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment teams and safety rounds.
  • Document nursing assessments and care plans according to facility policy.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and protect patient vulnerabilities.
  • Support colleagues through knowledge sharing and collaborative practices.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder treatment practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
