About The Position

CHEO is a global leader in pediatric health, transforming from a 20th-century acute care hospital into a 21st-century integrated child and youth health system. Ranked in the top 1% of Canadian hospitals for digitization, CHEO combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed unit for critically ill medical and surgical patients aged 18 and under, covering areas like congenital heart disease, respiratory failure, and neurosurgery. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 21-bed Level IIIb unit providing intensive care for vulnerable preterm and term infants, with services for congenital abnormalities, neurosurgical disorders, and genetic disorders. As a member of the Critical Care Flex Team, you will be trained in both NICU and PICU, with extensive orientation and support provided. The nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care, practicing according to standards, and providing learning experiences for patients and families.

Requirements

  • Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential)
  • Minimum 2 years paediatric acute care experience OR critical care experience OR neonatal experience OR other appropriate combinations of education and experience, along with the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position, may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience (Essential)
  • Current PALS certification OR successful completion of PALS certification within 12 months of hire (Essential)
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care (Essential)
  • Demonstrated strong family centered care skills (Essential)
  • Current CPR and NRP Certification (Essential)
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing (Preferred)
  • Critical Care courses and Certification or other appropriate combination of education and experience (Preferred)
  • Critical Care experience with the ability to care for Hemodynamically unstable and ventilated patients (Preferred)
  • Bilingual (English/ French) (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families.
  • Effectively uses the nursing process.
  • Practices according to the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Hospital, and the patient service unit.
  • Provides appropriate learning experiences for the patient and family to promote or maintain wellness, and to achieve an optimal quality of life.
  • Is accountable for maintaining competence while developing the quality of his/ her professional nursing practice.
