About The Position

The Packer Avenue Marine Terminal is operated by Greenwich Terminals LLC and is one of the most productive terminals in the United States. The facility employs 12 highly productive and safe in-house labor crews and offers 19 start times which creates greater flexibility for vessel departure and arrival times. This adds up to cargo being moved faster, discharged faster, and saves distributors time and money. Greenwich Terminals is seeking a skilled Reefer Mechanic to contribute to overall terminal operations by maintaining and repairing refrigerated units (reefers). Experience in a port, terminal, or intermodal environment is preferred. This is a union position offering excellent benefits, including paid vacation and holidays, full health care at no cost to the employee, and a pension and severance fund. 2nd and 3rd Shift Positions Available.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience as a Reefer Mechanic, or a Technical School diploma
  • Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems and electrical systems
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and repair manuals
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds
  • Strong communication skills and a team-oriented mindset
  • Dependable, persistent, and able to manage time effectively
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and strong attention to detail
  • Commitment to safety management and safe working practices
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) upon job offer
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions at a busy port terminal

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a port, terminal, or intermodal environment is preferred
  • EPA Section 608 Certification preferred (for refrigerant handling)
  • CDL a plus

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, test, and perform preventative maintenance on reefer units to ensure proper working condition
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration system malfunctions on reefer units (e.g., Carrier, Thermo King, Daikin, StarCool)
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and post-repair testing to verify units are operating efficiently and to industry standards
  • Replace defective parts and components as needed
  • Listen to and assess operator complaints to identify and resolve equipment issues
  • Respond to service calls and provide on-site repairs as needed
  • Maintain accurate equipment records by documenting all inspections, repairs, and service history in accordance with company procedures
  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and service supplies
  • Collaborate with operations, dispatch, terminal staff, shipping lines, and vendors to prioritize urgent repairs and ensure efficient service delivery
  • Keep equipment and work area clean, safe, and well-organized at all times
  • Follow all company safety policies, regulatory standards, and utilize safe working practices
  • Ability to work at satellite sites within a 10-mile radius
