Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field required.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification required.
  • Strong knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles, resident-centered care, and leisure programming.
  • Ability to assess resident needs and develop meaningful interventions that enhance quality of life.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and collaborate effectively with staff, residents, families, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to resident rights, confidentiality, advocacy, and person-centered care.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with older adults, rehabilitation, dementia care, or long-term care populations preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare regulations, documentation standards, and resident assessment processes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programs that support residents' physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being.
  • Conduct assessments and develop individualized recreation interventions, group programs, community outings, and one-on-one activities.
  • Supervise Recreation Therapy staff and volunteers while supporting daily department operations.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate recreation services into resident care plans and quality-of-life initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including assessments, care plans, progress notes, MDS, and discharge summaries.
  • Coordinate resident and family engagement initiatives, including councils and support groups.
  • Develop and maintain weekly and monthly activity calendars based on resident interests and assessed needs.
  • Support staff development through coaching, training, and participation in hiring activities.
  • Assist with departmental goal setting, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement efforts.
