About the position

The Recreational Therapist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves developing, organizing, and administering recreational and creative arts programs aimed at providing therapeutic treatment to veterans. The role is situated within Patient Care Services and encompasses various settings, including Community Living Centers, Psychiatry, and Residential Rehabilitation Programs. The therapist will work closely with veterans to enhance their overall health and well-being through tailored therapeutic interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Review recreational therapy consults and conduct comprehensive evaluations.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans with measurable therapeutic goals and objectives.
  • Recommend adaptations, modifications, and/or assistive technology to meet a patient's assessed needs in recreational therapy.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions using various methods, including assistive technology and adapted sports.
  • Act as a subject matter expert to staff, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Serve as a recreational therapy representative on interdisciplinary teams as needed.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers regarding treatment interventions and goals.
  • Assist in patient coverage for absent staff members to ensure continuity of care.
  • Delegate and provide clinical supervision for recreational therapy assistants, if applicable.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation, or a bachelor's degree in any field with certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS).
  • Certification in recreational therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC is mandatory.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in working with veterans or in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and adapted sports.
