About the position

The Recreation Center Coordinator will work under the direction of the Community Youth Centers Jennings Recreation Center Supervisor VI. The incumbent will model good behavior, encourage and guide youth participating in the program to participate in harmony, using proper social conduct and respect. The incumbent will facilitate youth in recreational games, recreational sports, and educational enrichment. The incumbent will work with a team to plan, lead, and execute all youth activities, programs, and community events. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, leads, organizes, and evaluates daily recreational and educational activities, programs, games, sports, tournaments, youth groups and events for youth of all ages.
  • Encourages good behavior, acts as a role model at all times, and implements the Center rules among participants, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Communicates, on a daily basis, in a professional manner with supervisor, co-workers, participants, youth, volunteers, and the general public; answers phones, opens and closes/secures building.
  • Creates, designs/sets-up, and implements programs, activities and tournaments.
  • Attends Center staff meetings to plan daily activities and accepts assigned responsibilities.
  • Gathers and organizes all supplies and equipment needed for each activity.
  • Works with the team and Center Supervisor to maintain all equipment and supplies and ensure they are used properly.
  • Keeps accurate daily attendance for each activity and reports this to the Center Supervisor.
  • Cooks and serves Kids Café meals, maintains kitchen, completes program paperwork, and complies with all the rules and regulations given by the program.
  • Prepares and serves snacks and completes paperwork.
  • Assists with any and all Free Lunch/Meal Programs the centers partner with, completes program paperwork, and complies with all the rules and regulations given by the program.
  • Helps maintain and updates current registration information for all participants.
  • Assists and encourages youth to clean areas inside and outside building after completing activities.
  • Assists in keeping the building clean, sanitary, and safe for all that enter; Reports irregularities and abnormal conditions at facility to supervisor.
  • Encourages all youth and adults to participate in Center activities.
  • Promotes the Community Youth Centers daily programs and activities with distribution of flyers in surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Works with co-workers and supervisor to complete inventory on program items on hand and needed for current and upcoming programs and activities.
  • Works with volunteers and community service workers.
  • Facilitates programs, activities and classes.
  • Works at other Community Youth Centers (Cooper, Weisser) or other park facilities as requested.
  • Drives a City vehicle when needed to transport youth, food, and other needed items.
  • Performs duties in accordance with the City's safety rules operating regulations and practices and follows required procedure for reporting injuries.

Requirements

  • One or more years of experience in Education, Recreation, Sports, or a field related to working with children.
  • Desire to guide, positively mentor, engage and interact with youth on a daily basis.
  • Effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of working effectively with people in the workplace as well as in the public.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to take own initiative to plan and organize activities in a timely manner.
  • Understanding that work hours are not standard 8-5pm, with evenings and occasional weekends required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License if City vehicle is used.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR by the American Heart Association within two weeks of employment.

Benefits

  • Pay Rate: $15-$17/hour
  • Work hours: 20-40 per week during summer program, 20-30 per week during after school program.
