About the position

The Recovery Coach serves as a personal guide and liaison for individuals with substance use disorders, primarily identified in the Emergency Department or affiliated treatment settings. This role focuses on supporting patients by helping them identify treatment needs, develop and monitor individualized treatment plans, and encouraging them to remain in treatment. The Recovery Coach is responsible for providing outreach, support, and recovery check-ups both on-site and in the community, while functioning as part of a treatment team.

Responsibilities

  • Work actively with patients with Substance Use Disorders identified in the Emergency Department or other WVU Medicine treatment settings.
  • Help link patients to outpatient treatment.
  • Provide mentoring through life-experience to individuals experiencing substance use problems.
  • Meet face to face with individuals and identified support persons in person and/or by phone, at a frequency and format requested and agreed upon by the individual, ideally at least once a week.
  • Develop individualized plans with patients and monitor those wellness plans during meetings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of state or nationally recognized Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification training with a minimum of 40 hours in Ethics, Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, and Recovery/Wellness Planning.
  • West Virginia state and Federal criminal background check required for DHHR WV CARES regulated area.
  • Bureau of Medical Services Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification or WVCBAPP certification within one (1) year of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid Driver's License
  • WVCBAPP Peer Recovery Certification
  • Certificate of completion of the CCAR Recovery Coaching in the Emergency Department.
  • Active participation in recovery for two or more years and current active attendance at community recovery meetings.
