About the position

The Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian at the University of Kansas Libraries is a full-time, tenure-track position responsible for cataloging a diverse range of rare and contemporary materials, including books, maps, and audiovisual items. This role involves contributing to the development of cataloging policies and procedures while actively participating in departmental meetings and initiatives. The librarian will work within the Spencer Cataloging Unit and will be integral to the cataloging and processing of resources for the Kenneth Spencer Research Library.

Responsibilities

  • Provide original, complex, and regular copy cataloging for materials in various formats and languages.
  • Resolve cataloging conflicts such as duplicate records and incorrect holdings.
  • Verify and establish authority records for personal names, corporate names, and subject headings.
  • Maintain awareness of best practices and emerging standards in cataloging.
  • Collaborate with team members to support cataloging activities and initiatives.
  • Engage in scholarly research activities contributing to the profession's knowledge.

Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent, or a PhD in library and information science.
  • Minimum of two years' successful original cataloging experience.
  • Experience with cataloging standards such as DCRM, RDA, LCSH, and MARC21 formats.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of bibliographic description for rare materials in an academic or research library setting.
  • Reading knowledge of at least one western European or Cyrillic language other than English.
  • Proficiency with information technology systems in an academic library context, such as OCLC and Voyager.
  • Ability to catalog various bibliographical formats including monographs and sound recordings.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
