About The Position

The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for the position of Public Works Laborer (Seasonal) - Grade 9. This position is responsible for assisting Public Works personnel in performing a variety of tasks related to the assigned department. The wage is $19.10/hour ($20.74/hour with CDL). This is a Non-Exempt/Seasonal position within the Public Works Department. Applications will be accepted until May 27, 2026 (at 9:00 a.m. CT). Applications without a resume will be disqualified. There is a flexible start and end date/hours of seasonal work, and the position can start as soon as possible. Preference will be given to those that can work into the late fall, with flexible shifts and hours available.

Requirements

  • Completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient knowledge to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must be 18-years or older to operate equipment.
  • Ability to handle hazardous chemicals and follow safety procedures.
  • Skill in problem solving and completing work plans.
  • Skill in operation of hand, power, mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to provide Form DD-214 if eligible for veteran's preference.
  • Must be able to provide Form DD-214, marriage certificate, and a letter less than one year old from Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs indicating disability, or the veteran’s death certificate if claiming preference as the eligible spouse of a disabled or deceased veteran.
  • Must be able to provide Form DD-214 and a letter less than one year old from the Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs indicating disability if claiming disabled veteran’s preferences.
  • Must be able to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Must complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) for higher wage
  • Ability to work into the late fall

Responsibilities

  • Assists personnel with flushing and painting hydrants
  • Helps with performing weekly replacement of street light bulbs.
  • Assists personnel in performing tasks related to the maintenance/operations of the city’s landfill, including but not limited to mowing, trimming, road magnetizing, and garbage pickup.
  • Helps with mowing, trimming, planting, pruning, and removing trees and garbage from parks, boulevards, and lawn areas.
  • Operates equipment including but not limited to, push mowers, zero turn mowers, weed trimmers, pickup truck, chain saws, brush chipper, dump truck, rototiller, and tractor.
  • Assists personnel in patching and chip sealing city roadways.
  • Operates a variety of hand tools and small engine equipment.
  • Assists personnel with maintenance of equipment and tools
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Assists in the hauling of material needed for water main repairs, roadway repairs, and snow removal (for CDL Holders).
