About the position
The Public Service Worker II position is a full-time role focused on maintaining the beautification and functionality of the Silver Spring Urban Business District. This role involves performing various manual labor tasks, including landscape maintenance, litter collection, graffiti removal, and supporting community events. The position is essential for enhancing the quality of life in Downtown Silver Spring and requires teamwork, public interaction, and a commitment to outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Maintaining landscape and streetscape standards
- Collecting litter, recycling, and sweeping/cleaning sidewalks
- Removing graffiti
- Performing light brick repair work
- Supporting special festivals and events in the district
- Assisting the work of the Public Service Aides
Requirements
- Ability to read and write in English and carry out simple written instructions
- Ability and willingness to perform work for prolonged periods in severe weather
- Ability to exert moderate physical effort for prolonged periods and heavy physical effort for limited periods
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 'C' (or equivalent) driver's license
Nice-to-haves
- GED or High school diploma equivalency
- Two or more years of experience providing direct work in urban maintenance services
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and spoken mediums
- Experience with power tools or construction and working in extreme conditions
- Experience delivering waste management and maintenance services for a municipality public grounds
- Experience delivering streetscaping maintenance services, infrastructure repair, and asset restoration for a municipality or public grounds
