About the position

The Public Safety Officer is responsible for performing law enforcement and public safety activities in a manner that upholds the university's atmosphere of academic and individual freedom. This role involves enforcing criminal and traffic laws, as well as college regulations, to protect individuals and property from willful or accidental harm. The officer must work to maintain the trust of the campus community, ensuring that duties are carried out with understanding, cooperation, and support from the public served. Responsibilities include effective verbal communication with a diverse range of individuals, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as providing information and assistance as needed. The officer will also question victims, complainants, and suspects to gather information on crimes and incidents, and prepare written factual reports for supervisors. A high level of responsibility, integrity, and social awareness is essential for this position.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Equivalent combination of 2 years college education, law enforcement/security experience, or military experience
  • Certified New York State Security Officer
  • Valid New York State Driver's License with a good driving record
  • New York State Pistol Permit
  • Satisfactory completion of New York State Basic Peace Officers course
  • Satisfactory completion of New York State Peace Officer Firearms course
  • Completion of all training required by the college
  • Good powers of observation and memory
  • Good judgment and mental alertness
  • Good physical condition
