About the position

The Nursing Assistant at South Shore Health plays a crucial role in patient care across nursing areas, ensuring the safe transport of patients and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position involves direct patient interaction, observation, and support under the supervision of licensed personnel, while also performing clerical duties to enhance the efficiency of the nursing unit. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for fostering a safe environment and adhering to compliance standards, all while promoting patient and family-centered care.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient care throughout nursing areas under the supervision of licensed personnel.
  • Transport patients safely via wheelchair or stretcher.
  • Document services rendered appropriately.
  • Function as an Observer for patients requiring constant observation.
  • Perform general receptionist and clerical duties to facilitate nursing unit operations.
  • Observe, obtain, and report patient data/status to assigned RN.
  • Respond to peaks in acuity and emergent situations as directed by nursing staff.
  • Maintain current knowledge and certification, including BLS certification.
  • Function as a preceptor to new employees.
  • Demonstrate professional working relationships with colleagues.
  • Verify patient identification with two identifiers prior to procedures.
  • Comply with CDC hand hygiene guidelines and universal precautions.
  • Conduct patient safety rounds and follow chain of command for safety risks.
  • Utilize required software applications and understand downtime operations.
  • Work within legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standards.
  • Safeguard the privacy and security of patient information.
  • Collaborate with patients and families in care planning and evaluation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Previous Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately.
  • Ability to deal efficiently with a variety of individuals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
  • Instructor certification for ACLS and BLS preferred.
