About the position

The Prototype Machinist position is a full-time, direct hire role based in Troy, AL, with relocation assistance provided. This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual who possesses extensive experience in a prototype machining environment. The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in Turning, Grinding, and Milling, along with the ability to interpret blueprints and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles. A minimum of 5 years of experience in general machining is required, particularly with Haas and Makino Controls. The role also necessitates the ability to write programs when needed, and a solid background in manual machining techniques is preferred. Additionally, the candidate should be capable of providing constructive feedback to design engineers to enhance product development and manufacturing processes. In this role, the Prototype Machinist will work under limited supervision to fabricate and modify novel firearm parts, fixtures, and jigs according to drawing specifications. The machinist must be adept at working from engineering drawings, sketches, or other written or oral instructions, as well as tool design drawings. Responsibilities include maintaining tooling, fixturing, materials, and CNC programs systematically to ensure proper execution of machining processes. The machinist will also be tasked with developing and fabricating tooling and fixtures to support the machining and development of prototypes, as well as reworking parts. Furthermore, the role involves making advanced program changes without supervision and ensuring that work areas are organized, clean, and free of hazards by implementing 5S practices. Knowledge of Lathe, Mill, Surface Grind, OD Grind, and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is essential for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and modify novel firearm parts, fixtures, and jigs to drawing specifications under limited supervision.
  • Work from engineering drawings, sketches, or other written or oral instructions as well as tool design drawings.
  • Maintain tooling, fixturing, materials, and CNC programs systematically to ensure proper execution of processes.
  • Develop and fabricate tooling and fixtures to support machining and development of prototype and reworking parts.
  • Develop and fabricate prototype tooling for the Engineering lab assembly process for low-volume builds.
  • Make advanced program changes without supervision.
  • Ensure work areas are organized, clean, and hazard-free; implement 5S practices.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 5 years of CNC experience
  • Strong knowledge of Turning, Grinding, and Milling
  • Ability to interpret technical prints and apply GD&T
  • Experience with Haas and Makino Controls
  • Ability to write CNC programs when required
  • Solid background in manual machining techniques
  • Experience maintaining and changing tools
  • Experience determining offsets and adjusting accordingly
  • Working knowledge of measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and height stands.
