About the position

Urban Engineers is seeking qualified individuals to join the Rail and Transit Construction Management Department as our Project Accountant in New Brunswick, NJ. This position will be responsible for monitoring railroad force account budgets and expenditures at the project site. The Project Accountant will play a crucial role in ensuring that all financial aspects of the project are accurately tracked and reported. This includes investigating variances, verifying charges, and reporting on the status of force account billings to track costs and process payments in a timely manner. The successful candidate will be expected to prepare and maintain logs of planned and scheduled force account activities, ensuring that all records are up to date and accurate. In addition to maintaining logs, the Project Accountant will review force account billings for accuracy and work closely with project staff to resolve any discrepancies between billing and actual force account charges. This role will also involve drafting letters and emails related to force account estimates, expenditures, discrepancies, and unbilled amounts. Monthly reporting will be a key responsibility, as the Project Accountant will prepare force account expenditures versus budget and trending reports, providing insights into the financial health of the project. The Project Accountant will report on the status of force account billings and expenditures during progress meetings, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed. Cross-checking force account billing charges against actual field records will be necessary to resolve any accounting or billing problems with the responsible parties. Keeping the supervisor informed of force account budget status and problems is essential, as is assisting in the financial closeout of the contract. The Project Accountant may also be called upon to perform additional financial assignments as requested by the supervisor or client, and will be responsible for tracking and maintaining records of cancelled or excessive use of force account services.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and maintaining logs of planned/scheduled force account activities.
  • Reviewing force account billings for accuracy.
  • Working with Project staff to resolve discrepancies between billing and actual force account charges.
  • Drafting letters/emails relating to force account estimates, expenditures, discrepancies and unbilled amounts.
  • Preparing monthly force account expenditures vs budget and trending reports.
  • Reporting on the status of force account billings and expenditures at progress meetings.
  • Cross-checking force account billing charges against actual field records to resolve accounting or billing problems with the responsible parties.
  • Keeping supervisor informed of force account budget status and problems.
  • Assisting in the financial close out of the contract.
  • Performing additional financial assignments upon request of supervisor or client.
  • Tracking and maintaining records of cancelled or excessive use of force account services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business or engineering.
  • Knowledge of construction contract activities and financial documents.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software.
  • Experience as an administrative aid or inspector on a transit construction project is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
