About the position

The Professional Physician Coder is responsible for accurately coding and billing professional physician services by accessing a wide range of physician billing and Health Information Systems. This entry-level role requires the coder to review medical records and utilize various coding classification systems to ensure proper reimbursement and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Reviews medical records and codes physician services utilizing current ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS classifications systems.
• Codes diagnosis, co-morbidities, complications, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, supplies, materials, injections, and drugs.
• Assists with the Central Business Office to ensure appropriate and complete follow up of patient accounts to maximize reimbursement.
• Notifies Team Lead, Manager, and/or Compliance department of any compliance violations discovered during the review process.
• Communicates effectively with physicians, physician extenders, physician offices, members of the coding team and manager.
• Utilizes resource material available in department to support accurate coding practices.
• Maintains patient confidentiality.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with the organization's policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Computer/typing literacy, knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Medical terminology required.
• Entry level physician certified coding experience in professional or physician practice coding required.
• One of the following national certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P), or Certified Medical Coder (CMC) required.

Nice-to-haves

• Associate degree preferably with Medical Office Billing preferred.
• Prior physician practice experience is highly desirable.
