About the position

The Professional Geologist 1 position is responsible for performing professional geology duties related to water management programs in Long Island, including the Water Withdrawal Programs and Well Driller programs. The role involves overseeing compliance, permitting, and inspection processes, as well as developing strategies for sustainable aquifer management. The incumbent will work closely with various stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the Long Island aquifer system and will supervise staff involved in these programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional geology duties related to the Water Withdrawal Programs and Long Island Well and Water Well Driller programs.
  • Assist with implementation and oversight of the Long Island Water Supply permitting, inspection, compliance, and water well driller programs.
  • Develop regional protocols and special initiatives to ensure the sustainability of the Long Island aquifer system.
  • Keep the Regional Director, Regional Engineer, Regional Water Manager, and other involved DEC managers informed of program accomplishments and emerging issues.
  • Assist with the development of strategies for sustainable aquifer management using results from the Long Island Groundwater Sustainability Study.
  • Perform reviews of Water Withdrawal and Long Island Well applications and draft corresponding permits using hydrogeologic principles.
  • Manage, review, track, and evaluate well pumpage data and water quality issues.
  • Conduct pump test reviews and assist with regional modeling.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of water conservation plans and aquifer management strategies.
  • Map new and historical water wells using ArcMap GIS.
  • Conduct field inspections at well sites and oversee permit compliance monitoring.
  • Initiate and follow up on enforcement actions, including testifying in administrative hearings or court.
  • Organize and analyze data, identify findings, and provide recommendations based on hydrogeologic principles.
  • Supervise staff in permitting, compliance, inspection, and well drilling programs.

Requirements

  • A New York State Professional Geologist's license and current registration.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology.
  • Experience in GIS.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with water conservation plans and aquifer management strategies.
  • Familiarity with hydrogeologic calculations and regional modeling.
