About the position

The Probation and Parole Officer position within the Missouri Department of Corrections is a vital role focused on supervising offenders and facilitating their reintegration into society. This position involves assessing offenders' needs and risks, developing supervision strategies, and collaborating with various agencies to ensure public safety and effective offender management. Officers are responsible for conducting home visits, counseling offenders, and preparing reports for legal authorities, all while contributing to the mission of transforming lives within the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate offender's home, work, and social environments for circuit courts and the Board of Probation and Parole.
  • Collect, verify, and evaluate data to incorporate into reports and records.
  • Assess needs and risk levels to determine appropriate supervision strategies.
  • Contact offenders in their homes or places of employment to counsel them on personal and adjustment problems.
  • Attend court to receive assignments and make reports.
  • Assist in vocational, educational, and social adjustment planning for assigned offenders.
  • Cooperate with public and private agencies and law enforcement.
  • Investigate offender violations and take appropriate action, including issuing warrants.
  • Prepare statistical reports of activities and administer breathalyzer/urinalysis testing.
  • Assist in special investigations, research projects, and other activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Four or more years of vocational or higher-level experience in social services, probation and parole, corrections casework, guidance and counseling, education, psychology, sociology, mental health, substance use, law enforcement, or closely related fields.
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Successful completion of safety training including defensive tactics and the ability to re-qualify annually.
