The Department is located within the East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI), which was designed to offer state-of-the-art medical technology, education, and research in one cardiovascular center. The cornerstone of ECHI is the collaboration between clinical medicine and scientific research. Researchers, scientists, and clinicians work together to create a place where patients come to receive world-class innovative care and cardiovascular specialists come to gain expertise. Research conducted within ECHI is related to various cardiovascular diseases, including: (1) clinical and basic research efforts in cardiovascular care, (2) clinical trials to develop new treatments for cardiovascular disease, (3) educational programs for local, regional, and national health care providers, (4) wellness and prevention programs, and (5) clinical programs, including adult cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.
