About The Position

The Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB), an arts education nonprofit dedicated to providing equitable access to music education, is seeking a motivated and student-centered private piano instructor with knowledge of jazz styles. This role involves instructing current and new piano students, with a focus on jazz proficiency. The ideal candidate will possess a strong jazz background, the ability to teach students of all levels, and an inclusive, culturally responsive teaching style that aligns with CMCB's curricular pillars: Musical Artistry, Social-Emotional Development, and Cultural Inclusion, as well as their Student Pathways initiative. This position offers opportunities for community, professional growth, paid administrative time, and paid professional development. Additional teaching opportunities may be available for those proficient in multiple instruments or interested in public school teaching.

Requirements

  • Strong jazz background
  • Bachelor's degree in music performance/education with knowledge in the field of piano performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience
  • Ability to teach advanced piano students in a variety of styles
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience
  • Knowledge of early childhood piano pedagogies
  • Ability to adapt to individual needs of a diverse student population and provide constructive feedback
  • Adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
  • Interest in Culturally Responsive Teaching, Creative Youth Development - Student Voice/Agency, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
  • Regularly reflects on practice, seeks and responds to feedback, and demonstrates self-awareness and commitment to continuous learning and development
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, when conversing with students, families, and colleagues
  • Skilled at engaging with families and building collaborative, respectful relationships with them in service of student learning
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets)

Nice To Haves

  • Accompaniment experience
  • Supervisory experience is highly desirable and may lead to future department leadership opportunities
  • Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable
  • Knowledge in a diverse range of styles (i.e. Rock, Blues, Folk, Classical, and/or Popular Music)
  • Experience teaching in a public school or community music school setting
  • Ability to play and teach multiple instruments
  • Interest in teaching in the public schools

Responsibilities

  • Teach students according to curricular guidelines
  • Prepare students for performance events and opportunities
  • Hold at least one studio recital during the school year
  • Complete attendance in registration software accurately and timely
  • Maintain open and regular communication with parents/caregivers and students via email to support educational progress
  • Attend department meetings and the annual all-faculty meetings as scheduled
  • Participate in department events, competitions, recitals, and concerts
  • Facilitate student participation in musical opportunities
