About The Position

The Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB), an arts education nonprofit dedicated to providing equitable access to music education, is seeking a motivated and student-centered private and group voice and songwriting teacher. This role involves instructing current and new students starting Fall 2026. The ideal candidate will have a strong singer/songwriter background, experience teaching ages 4-12 in group settings, and an inclusive, culturally responsive teaching style aligned with CMCB's pillars of Musical Artistry, Social-Emotional Development, and Cultural Inclusion, as well as their Student Pathways philosophy. This position offers opportunities for community, growth, paid administrative time, and professional development. Additional teaching opportunities may be available for those who can play and teach multiple instruments or are interested in public school teaching.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in music performance/education with knowledge in the field of voice performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, songwriting techniques, and creative processes.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring youth in a classroom, workshop, or community setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience, including demonstrated experience teaching ages 4-12 in a group setting, and knowledge of early childhood voice pedagogies and general classroom management.
  • Ability to adapt to individual needs of a diverse student population and provide constructive feedback.
  • Must be adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values.
  • Interest in Culturally Responsive Teaching, Creative Youth Development - Student Voice/Agency, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
  • Regularly reflects on practice, seeks and responds to feedback, and demonstrates self-awareness and commitment to continuous learning and development.
  • Ability to motivate and/or inspire others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, when conversing with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Skilled at engaging with families and building collaborative, respectful relationships with them in service of student learning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets).

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge in a diverse range of styles (i.e. Classical, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk, and/or Popular Music).
  • Proficient to strong sight reading skills & accompaniment experience.
  • Ability to play and teach multiple instruments.
  • Interest in teaching in the public schools.

Responsibilities

  • Engage students through teaching fundamentals and instructing specific technical skills in group classes.
  • Implement curriculum incorporating basic music skills, music reading, music and movement, and fundamentals of voice performance.
  • Teach students according to curricular guidelines, including techniques for melody creation, lyric writing, song structure, and character-driven songwriting.
  • Prepare students for performance events and opportunities.
  • Hold at least one studio recital during the school year.
  • Complete attendance in registration software accurately and timely.
  • Maintain open and regular communication with parents/caregivers and students via email to support educational progress.
  • Attend department meetings and the annual all-faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Participate in department events, competitions, recitals, and concerts.
  • Facilitate student participation in musical opportunities.
