About The Position

Reporting to the Mayo Clinic Platform (MCP) Director of Technology, the Principal Cloud Architect is responsible for defining, governing, and evolving the overall cloud architecture strategy for Mayo Clinic Platform, with a primary focus on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This role serves as the technical authority for cloud architecture while remaining deeply hands-on, contributing directly to complex design decisions, implementations, and troubleshooting efforts.

Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on experience across compute, storage, IAM, networking (VPC design, hybrid connectivity, network security, service networking), and observability services in GCP.
  • Experience conducting deep technical architecture reviews, including code, infrastructure, and deployment patterns.
  • Experience providing hands-on guidance and mentorship to teams implementing cloud-native and Kubernetes-based solutions.
  • Experience defining the vision, scope, and operating model for the SRE function.
  • Experience establishing and operationalizing service level objectives (SLOs), service level indicators (SLIs), and error budgets.
  • Experience implementing observability, incident management, and automation practices to improve system reliability.
  • Experience driving adoption of infrastructure as code, CI/CD, GitOps, and automated remediation strategies.
  • Experience ensuring platform operability, including monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and performance tuning.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the target-state architecture for Mayo Clinic Platform in GCP.
  • Actively contribute to the design and implementation of complex cloud solutions, including hands-on involvement in critical systems.
  • Establish and enforce cloud architecture standards, patterns, and reference architectures.
  • Ensure alignment of cloud architecture with enterprise security, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with engineering, product, security, compliance and data teams to ensure solutions align with platform architecture and standards.
  • Serve as the primary expert in GCP, with deep, hands-on experience across compute, storage, IAM, networking (VPC design, hybrid connectivity, network security, service networking), and observability services.
  • Conduct deep technical architecture reviews, including code, infrastructure, and deployment patterns.
  • Provide hands-on guidance and mentorship to teams implementing cloud-native and Kubernetes-based solutions.
  • Act as a trusted advisor for complex technical initiatives and strategic programs.
  • Define the vision, scope, and operating model for the SRE function within Mayo Clinic Platform.
