About The Position

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. This role is for a Project Engineer within the HVD Engineering team, focusing on supporting project managers and leading engineering tasks for the Electric Distribution business area. The position involves planning, design, quality, testing, and execution of projects, with a primary focus on protection and control, but encompassing any project within the HVD portfolio. Projects can range from small installations to large-scale control house additions. The Project Engineer ensures technical project scope is coordinated with internal and external engineers, vendors, fabricators, and contractors. This role requires applying standard engineering techniques to a sequence of related tasks, often involving moderate to complex assignments. The Prin Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines required for project completion, overseeing multiple initiatives, planning projects, establishing criteria, coordinating reviews, and ensuring proper implementation. Within I&C, this role also determines staffing needs for contracted project engineers, oversees their deliverables, and approves timesheets, with support from a senior engineering manager.

Requirements

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of design and visualizations software such as MicroStation.
  • Proficient in MS Office, with aptitude for learning new software.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations, best practices and performance standards.
  • Understanding and experience in contract management.
  • Experience in the management of engineering contracts and engineering deliverables.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity working in advanced projects.
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering (PE) license with seven (7) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity working in advanced projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Project Management Information Systems such as Unifier and Document Control tools such as Project Wise is not a requirement but a plus.
  • Knowledge of Project Management principles and skills is a plus.
  • An Electrical Engineering background is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate and monitor the assigned engineering projects.
  • Build strong partnerships with business partners and deeply understand their business goals.
  • Interact with clients, interpreting their needs and requirements, and representing them in the field.
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications.
  • Support project delivery by helping balance team performance with tight deadlines.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Review the engineering tasks and initiate the necessary corrective actions.
  • Provide assistance and technical support to project managers and other project participants and collaborate with senior engineers to create more efficient project methods and to maintain the project’s profitability.
  • Perform quality control tasks on budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance and reporting on the project's status.
  • Offer technical assistance and support to project managers and other team participants.
  • Review engineering deliverables and tasks, initiating appropriate corrective actions as needed to ensure project quality and accuracy.
  • Support Agile project delivery by helping balance team performance with strict deadlines.
  • Develop specifications for required project equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as necessary.
