About the position

Pre-Admission Testing Nurse is responsible for contacting incoming patients to obtain and review health history prior to surgery. Analyze and assess clinical data related to the patient's anesthesia risk. The nurse also works closely with the anesthesia department in coordinating the patient's needs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs accurate and complete assessments (including physical and psychological needs) with patients prior to admission, either in person or via telephone, and communicates information to appropriate team members and initiates the patient care plan.
  • Ensure pre-operative care requirements of patients are accomplished through use of nursing process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Provides individualized preoperative education, identifies areas of knowledge deficit, and provides additional needed information.
  • Alerts the anesthesia department of results of labs, physical assessment, and/or special needs of the patient prior to the date of surgery.
  • Demonstrates ability to work both independently, and as an effective member of a healthcare team to expedite patient preadmission activities and the admission process.
  • Possess adequate understanding of operative procedures, required patient preparations, and expected post-operative course.
  • Knowledgeable in surgical procedures, medications, and anesthesia techniques in order to answer patient questions and give appropriate pre-operative instructions.
  • Identifies and documents abnormal assessment results, as well as obvious discharge planning challenges on all patients and promptly reports information to appropriate members of the health care team, including anesthesia and provider.
  • Initiates and completes all appropriate forms both electronic and/or paper.
  • Participates in the weekly huddle to provide testing updates or information that would be important to upcoming cases.
  • Ensures completion of preadmission records through review of Physicians' orders, Informed consent, Preadmission testing, History and Physical.
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement plan of the department as directed by the Director and/or Manager.
  • Maintains competency through Licensure requirements and Core competencies.
  • Attends other programs as pertinent to job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related patient needs appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Attends and participates in hospital/department meetings as required.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
  • Performs all other related duties as requested or required by the Director and Supervisor.

Requirements

  • 2 years relevant clinical practice (preferred critical care experience or PACU experience)
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current state license
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
