About the position

The Staff Engineer position at Xcel Energy involves applying engineering principles and technical expertise to solve complex problems in the energy sector. The role includes leading projects, developing technical documentation, and providing support for various engineering activities. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of higher-level engineers and may mentor less experienced staff. Responsibilities

  • Use and apply technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform complex engineering assignments.
  • Support the development of technical documentation including designs, testing, calculations, and reports.
  • Provide ongoing technical support for project activities in Operations, Maintenance, testing/diagnostics, and Regulatory.
  • Lead small-medium, non-critical projects and coordinate critical projects under the direction of a higher-level engineer.
  • Support bid/evaluation processes including preparation of bid documents and technical evaluations for proposals.
  • Exchange information with inter-organizational teams and outside customers on complex matters.
  • Assign tasks and coordinate work of interns, drafters, technicians, and craft personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum.
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience for Staff level; 5+ years for Senior level; 9+ years for Principal level.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge and proficiency in specialty area and related disciplines.
  • EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) strongly preferred for Staff and Senior levels; PE (Professional Engineer) registration required for Principal level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, TARA, EMS, ASPEN, PROMOD, PowerWorld, PSCAD.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as reliability, load flow, stability, short circuit, voltage regulation, transients, power factor, losses.
