About the position

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for delivering specialized nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care throughout the peri-anesthesia continuum, ensuring high standards of care and patient safety. The PACU RN collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes and is responsible for comprehensive documentation of all phases of care in the electronic health record.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized nursing care in the PACU, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
  • Administer medications and procedures according to established policies and guidelines.
  • Conduct clinical assessments and recognize contraindications for anesthesia and surgical interventions.
  • Apply post-sedation scoring and assess patients' postoperative status, including cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
  • Implement appropriate interventions to maintain or return physiological systems to baseline or above.
  • Ensure comprehensive documentation of all phases of care in the electronic health record.
  • Participate in unit-based and organizational governance councils to improve quality care for veterans.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug test.

Nice-to-haves

  • A minimum of 3 years pre-operative and post-operative (Phase I and Phase II) surgical nursing experience.
