About the position

The Technical Director (TD) at Pomona College is responsible for overseeing the technical operations of events and productions, ensuring high-quality execution and collaboration with production teams. The TD leads and mentors technical staff, manages equipment maintenance, and serves as the lead designer for audio, video, and lighting for in-house productions. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and creative collaboration to fulfill the artistic vision of various events.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate technical operations for all productions and events.
  • Lead planning, design, and implementation of technical systems including sound, lighting, video, carpentry, rigging, and stage machinery.
  • Collaborate with production staff and clients to meet technical requirements and artistic visions.
  • Manage and mentor technical staff, ensuring proper training and development.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during rehearsals and events.
  • Oversee technical setup, operation, and strike for all events.
  • Collaborate with production teams to develop ground plans, lighting designs, and sound configurations.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and coordinate technical staffing and logistics.
  • Operate and oversee performance-related equipment.
  • Maintain and inventory all technical equipment, ensuring functionality and safety.
  • Collaborate on equipment upgrades and venue improvements.
  • Serve as lead designer for audio, video, and lighting for in-house productions and events.
  • Collaborate with external designers to implement design specifications.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license or equivalent means of reliable transportation.
  • OSHA 30 certification required; ETCP certification in rigging and/or electrical preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in the technical theater field, with two years in specialized audio, video, or lighting system maintenance and show operation.

  • Experience with After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, Premiere, Qlab, Yamaha Digital, BSS Audio Architect, ETC EOS Family, Vectorworks, and Lightwrite.
