About the position

The Police Officer position at the City of Boise involves performing law enforcement and crime prevention duties to support the criminal justice process. Officers patrol assigned areas, interact with the public, and enforce laws and ordinances to ensure public safety and foster positive relationships with the community. The role requires independent decision-making and may involve specialized law enforcement duties, with work reviewed through various evaluations.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned areas to prevent traffic violations and accidents, providing assistance to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
• Respond to reports of suspected violations and general calls for service, mediating disputes and gathering evidence as necessary.
• Initiate and assist with probable-cause arrests, ensuring compliance with city, state, and federal standards.
• Assume command responsibility for patrol officers when acting as Field Commander in the absence of a Sergeant.
• Conduct criminal investigations, identifying suspects and recovering stolen property, while collaborating with other agencies.
• Engage in community outreach to address safety concerns and promote a crime-free environment in schools.

Requirements

• Must meet Idaho Peace Officer Standards Training requirements for certification as a Police Officer.
• Must be at least 21 years of age by date of hire and possess 60 college academic credits or equivalent certification.
• Working knowledge of criminal justice processes, laws, regulations, and investigative techniques.
• Ability to communicate effectively in potentially controversial situations and manage time effectively.
• Capable of operating law enforcement tools and equipment safely, including firearms and non-lethal weapons.
