About the position

The Emeryville Police Department is a proactive, professional, public safety organization that prides itself on its thoughtful interactions and unwavering support with/for the community. In addition to the basic services such as patrol and dispatch, the Emeryville Police Department provides special services such as traffic, bicycle, foot patrol, K9, field evidence, and investigations. There is a strong commitment and dedication to making the City of Emeryville a safe environment to live and work. Police Officers participate in 4/10 and 3/12.5 work-week schedules and must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays. There is an 18-month probationary period, and this position is represented by the Emeryville Police Officers Association (EPOA).

Responsibilities

  • Answering and responding to calls for service
  • Protecting life and property
  • Making arrests
  • Enforcing federal, state, and local traffic laws and ordinances
  • Preventing and investigating crimes
  • Patrolling designated area(s) during an assigned shift on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or by patrol car
  • Performing crime prevention and community relations activities to ensure high-level of service to residents

Requirements

  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent with related college work
  • Be at least 21 years of age by the appointment date
  • Possess a valid California Class C Driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Free of felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions which mandate weapons restrictions
  • Have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 in each eye or corrected to 20/30
  • Possess normal color vision and hearing
  • Free from physical, emotional, or medical conditions which might adversely affect the ability to successfully do the job
  • Must have successfully graduated from a POST approved Law Enforcement Academy at the time of application for Academy Graduates
  • Must have a POST Basic certificate or higher and not have been separated for more than three (3) years from a law enforcement position in the State of California for Lateral applicants
