About the position

The Poison Information Specialist (SPI) at Jackson Health System is responsible for providing critical information and support regarding poisoning exposures to residents and healthcare professionals in South Florida. This role involves answering calls at the Florida Poison Information Center/Miami, assessing cases, providing treatment recommendations, and contributing to data collection and educational efforts. The SPI plays a vital role in managing poisoning cases and ensuring effective communication with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Answer calls regarding poisoning exposures and provide information to residents and healthcare professionals.
  • Utilize assessment skills to evaluate exposure and related factors within an established time frame.
  • Recognize life-threatening signs and symptoms and manage them appropriately.
  • Obtain complete patient history and assess toxicity and severity of exposure accurately.
  • Formulate a goal-directed plan of care reflecting the changing needs of the patient.
  • Utilize appropriate resources and references to develop and implement the plan of care.
  • Perform accurate triage of cases based on severity of exposure in a timely manner.
  • Provide patient education on treatment and prevention of poisoning exposures.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses according to established guidelines.
  • Collect data and develop research projects for presentation at scientific meetings.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of related experience in a healthcare or poison information setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
  • Valid Florida License required for Nurses, Pharmacists, or Physician Assistants.
  • Certification for Specialists in Poison Information (CSPI) is highly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with common toxins and their treatments.
  • Experience in clinical toxicology or emergency medicine.
