About the position

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant III (PNA III) at Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) plays a crucial role in providing rehabilitative patient care services in an inpatient psychiatric setting. This position involves working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) to deliver quality care, support patients in their recovery journey, and maintain therapeutic interactions to promote social skills and independence. The PNA III is an integral member of the recovery team, responsible for documenting patient behaviors, participating in care planning, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care services under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Assist with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence and self-care.
  • Monitor patients for medication administration or treatment, including taking vital signs.
  • Engage in therapeutic interactions with patients to promote living and social skills.
  • Document patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record.
  • Participate in individualized and unit-based programming.
  • Co-facilitate groups and promote patient participation in classes and programs.
  • Respond to psychiatric emergencies using appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Provide guidance and oversee the tasks of PNA I and II as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent OR at least two years' work experience.
  • Experience in psychiatric patient care or direct care preferred.
  • Knowledge of patient care techniques and treatment programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in taking vital signs and providing first aid and CPR.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Valid Texas driver license or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire.
