About The Position

This posting is for an existing vacancy. Reporting to the Manager of Community Planning, the successful applicant will be responsible for carrying out planning assignments and supporting the Community Planning team. The Planner I will assist with research and preparing reports/presentations on a range of policy matters including cultural heritage, agriculture, natural heritage and land use. This position will commence as soon as possible.

Requirements

  • A degree in Urban and Regional Planning from a recognized university program or an honors degree in a related program.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in municipal planning; or possess qualities, skills and work-related experience to the satisfaction of the department.
  • Membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute.
  • Knowledge of the Planning Act, Provincial legislation, and municipal development processes.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a solution-oriented, customer service approach using good judgment, creativity, strategic thinking, negotiation and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in team situations or with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel to various locations in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Legally able to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in various types of software used in Planning including AMANDA, GIS, 3D Modeling, Adobe Acrobat/Indesign, and/or databases is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Undertaking and/or assisting with policy planning projects such as the Official Plan review, download of the Region of Durham Official Plan, Secondary Plans, and other policy matters.
  • Preparing briefs and assisting in the preparation of reports, planning comments and other documents on a range of matters.
  • Supporting coordination of Advisory Committees of Council and the Department.
  • Facilitating public consultation and responding to inquiries.
  • Preparing presentations to Council and public information centres.
  • Participating in meetings with agencies, developers, citizen groups, residents and other Departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including those specific to the department.
