About the position

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Physician in their clinical specialty. This is an open continuous announcement that allows acceptance of applications throughout the year with eligible applicants being placed on the register and referred for consideration when vacancies occur. Positions will be located throughout the Southeast Region under the Indian Health Service, specifically in areas such as Albuquerque, Nashville, and Oklahoma.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultative and/or direct medical services within specialized areas to inpatients and/or outpatients health centers or hospitals.
  • Take patient history and perform physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and x-ray procedures, interpret clinical data, and formulate therapeutic programs.
  • Convey information to patients and their families, supporting them in times of illness.
  • Maintain adequate records detailing patient care activities.
  • Determine when specialist services are required and arrange for patient admissions to appropriate hospitals.
  • Make daily rounds to ensure effective coordination of services and optimum patient care.
  • Conduct initial and periodic health examinations, prescribe treatments, and administer immunizations as required.
  • Participate in Service Unit and Area meetings to develop and evaluate medical procedures to improve patient care.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from an accredited school in the U.S. or Canada.
  • At least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting (internship or first year of residency).
  • For GS-13: 3 years of graduate training in the specialty or equivalent experience.
  • For GS-14: 4 years of graduate training in the specialty or equivalent experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Board Certified in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying.
  • Active Registrant of the Board in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying.
