About the position

The Physician Assistant in Neurology (Epilepsy) at UTHealth Houston will provide advanced medical care to epilepsy patients, focusing on those with neuromodulation devices. This role is primarily outpatient, emphasizing comprehensive patient care under the supervision of a collaborating physician.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex, standardized patient care procedures that require specialized training.
  • Evaluate epilepsy patients independently and under physician supervision, particularly those with neuromodulation devices.
  • Perform patient evaluations, assessments, and provide appropriate treatment, including medication management.
  • Coordinate and implement the patient's plan of care.
  • Assist in collecting patient histories and screening for co-morbidities.
  • Perform physical examinations and provide episodic or problem-oriented care under physician supervision.
  • Interrogate and program neuromodulation devices independently and with physician supervision.
  • Order and interpret laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests.
  • Monitor treatment programs and inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information.
  • Facilitate patient education on medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion.
  • Assist physicians in formulating therapeutic decisions.
  • Maintain appropriate records and prepare chart documentation for physician review.
  • Assist with the organization and planning of neuromodulation clinics and data review meetings.
  • Track outcomes for epilepsy patients with neuromodulation devices.

Requirements

  • Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Current Physician Assistant certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Master's degree as a Physician Assistant or a Bachelor's degree with at least two years of professional experience.
