The role requires safely and accurately performing venipunctures, arterial and capillary specimen collections as requested in adults, children, and infants, including interpretation of physician orders and ensuring all requests are accurately and completely processed in the information system. Compliance processes must be completed as required.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients using the AIDET (PHLEBOT) model, providing instructions and directions as necessary.
  • Evaluates physician orders for type of specimens, time of draw, and specific specimen handling requirements.
  • Uses work lists to organize draws.
  • Utilizes hospital and laboratory computer systems to obtain information and clarify requests.
  • Communicates with physician offices to obtain diagnosis coding information and problem-solving.
  • Communicates with pharmacy and other patient care staff to assure proper, timely collection of various medication levels and tolerance tests.
  • Safely collects quality samples according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Handles a variety of body fluids to obtain and process specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Cleans, organizes, rotates, and stocks phlebotomy work areas, carts, OP draw sites, and inpatient units.
  • Knowledge of collection and ordering requirements for reference labs and specialty testing labs.
  • Collects specimens at other healthcare facilities as needed.
  • Attends in-services and continuing education seminars for personal and professional growth.
  • Implements ICARE principles using communication skills and human relations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Valid Driver's License/Meet Medical Centers Insurance requirement for applicable locations.
  • Computer literate.
  • Experience including customer service.
