About the position

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee position at Brigham and Women's Hospital involves supporting the pharmacy department under the supervision of licensed pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians. The role includes performing routine technical and clerical tasks essential for medication preparation and distribution, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and distribute unit dose medications, outpatient prescriptions, and stock orders.
  • Perform medication deliveries and distribute medications to patient care areas using barcode scanning.
  • Conduct pharmaceutical dosage calculations for preparing extemporaneous dosage forms under pharmacist supervision.
  • Return unused medications for credit and check medication expiration dates as assigned.
  • Fill medication requisitions and type labels for ambulatory and discharge prescriptions.
  • Manage inventory in pharmacy areas and automated dispensing cabinets (ADC).
  • Provide information and triage phone calls within the pharmacy department.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Utilize area-specific technology, including robotics and automation.
  • Follow institutional and departmental policies and procedures for quality and safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Previous hospital-related experience or certification from a pharmacy technician training program is desired.
  • Must be a registered Pharmacy Tech Trainee with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow complicated verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Strong communication skills and understanding of pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks under time constraints.

Nice-to-haves

  • Formal training or certification from a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Experience in a hospital setting.
