About the position

The position involves evaluating drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications. The individual will maintain accurate and complete documentation of all medicine-use-related activities to ensure appropriate distribution of medications. All areas of responsibility are subject to review by a licensed pharmacist. Under direct supervision, the role contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives while adhering to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. The individual will assist in preparing required reports, troubleshooting and maintaining the automated drug distribution system, and serving as a resource to nursing and pharmacy technicians regarding drug use and control in the automated system. Additionally, the role includes advising patients and healthcare professionals on medication use, compounding and labeling medications, ensuring secure storage of controlled substances, and preparing clinical briefs for medical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation of all medicine-use-related activities.
  • Assist in preparing required reports by compiling information.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and maintenance of automated drug distribution system.
  • Serve as a resource to nursing and pharmacy technicians regarding the use and control of drugs in the automated system.
  • Assist pharmacist with filling orders and IV preparation and delivery.
  • Check stock on a regular basis to ensure compliance with FDA requirements.
  • Participate in the training of pharmacy technicians and other nonprofessional personnel.
  • Advise patients, family, and health care professionals on medication use under direct supervision.
  • Compound, label, and package medications and pharmaceuticals under direct supervision.
  • Ensure secure storage of narcotics and other controlled substances under direct supervision.
  • Prepare clear and concise clinical briefs for use by nurses, medical staff, and pharmacy.
  • Consult with and advise medical staff personnel regarding drug utilization upon demonstration of competency.
  • Monitor drug therapy for appropriateness based on individual patient parameters and suggest alternate drug therapy when appropriate upon demonstration of competency.
  • Participate in meetings and on committees and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Pharm.D. student actively enrolled in a program from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy.
  • 1 year 6 months experience in a hospital setting required.
  • Certified by a national pharmacy technician certification program required.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Maryland required or eligible for a pharmacy student exemption from pharmacy technician registration by the State of MD.
