About The Position

As part of training to become a pharmacist, this role involves performing duties of a pharmacy technician and working closely with a pharmacist to develop skills aligned with the intern's current education level. The intern will assist pharmacists in preparing and dispensing medications, maintaining drug inventory, and managing patient records. This position operates under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and is restricted from performing tasks legally exclusive to registered pharmacists. Responsibilities include customer interaction, answering phones, processing insurance billing, operating the cash register, and participating in record-keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service by greeting and acknowledging every customer, demonstrating knowledge of merchandise, and assisting customers within the pharmacy.
  • Inform patients about any delays encountered in filling their prescriptions.
  • Answer telephones and emails, responding to inquiries that do not require a pharmacist's attention and recording messages for follow-up.
  • Maintain electronic records related to patient profiles, insurance, and prescription status (new, transferred, or discontinued).
  • Perform all duties of a pharmacy technician.
  • Bill insurance and/or customers for prescriptions and merchandise, and resolve questions or insurance rejections through appropriate channels.
  • Utilize an understanding of Medication Therapy Management (MTM) programs from various insurers to identify and flag qualifying patients.
  • Maintain patient charges, payroll deductions, and monthly billing according to local policy.
  • Follow appropriate cash handling and register procedures.
  • Assemble, prepare, and compound medications for inpatient and outpatient use.
  • Ensure all doses are checked by a pharmacist before dispensing or delivery to nursing units.
  • Accurately and efficiently prepare IV medications, including parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy.
  • Assist in inventory control to ensure medication availability, including ordering, checking in orders, stocking shelves, updating the computerized inventory system, rotating stock, processing recalls, and conducting quarterly inspections of drug storage areas for outdated or unusable medications, quarantining them separately.
  • Fill medication carts and/or medication dispensing machines.
  • Regularly sort and put away returned medications.
  • Prepare hand packs.
  • Prepare infusion products using appropriate sterile technique procedures.
  • Follow all procedures for documenting and dispensing controlled substances.
  • Handle controlled substances in a manner that ensures accountability and security.
  • Under Pharmacist supervision, counsel and/or provide information on drugs, their pharmacological action, dosage, contraindications, reactions, etc., to physicians, nurses, patients, and other interested parties as warranted and with discretion.
  • Under Pharmacist supervision, determine that medication dispensed to patients is correct as to drug, route of administration, strength, and expiration date.
  • Review patient medication profiles and/or charts to ensure the accuracy of the drug and/or dosage ordered when appropriate.
  • Under Pharmacist supervision, make routine rounds as required to obtain current patient information and provide professional services to customers.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
