About The Position

This role involves preparing medications for inpatients, outpatients, and employees according to departmental policies, with a pharmacist verifying each transaction before dispensing. The intern will compound sterile and non-sterile products, dispense medications under supervision, and maintain accurate records. Responsibilities include operating pharmacy equipment, managing inventory, auditing controlled drug records, maintaining patient census, returning reusable medications, filling unit-dose cassettes, conducting deliveries, obtaining signatures for controlled substance deliveries, exchanging unit-dose cassettes, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, managing stat box contents, inspecting nursing stations, assisting pharmacists with drug information and patient medication profiling, completing required documentation, and performing other technician-related functions.

Requirements

  • 3 years minimum completed at an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • English proficiency, oral and written.
  • Valid New York State Pharmacy Intern Permit required.

Responsibilities

  • Compounds sterile and non-sterile products as per protocol, ensuring final verification by a pharmacist.
  • Dispenses (with pharmacist supervision) and maintains accurate records of dispensing controlled substances, tax-free alcohol and investigational new drugs.
  • Demonstrates ability to operate required equipment, e.g., unit-dose repackaging, total parenteral nutrition compounder, laminar flow hoods, etc.
  • Ensures an adequate inventory of medications and supplies is maintained. Routinely checks for and removes expired medications from inventory.
  • Audits controlled drug disposition records for patient care units and reports discrepancies and unusual use patterns to a manger or director.
  • Maintains an accurate, current census, including cassette bin labels, for all assigned areas.
  • Returns reusable medication to stock before the end of the shift.
  • Accurately fills unit-dose cassettes and performs statistical count of all doses dispensed.
  • Conducts all required deliveries and other patient care rounds in a timely fashion.
  • Obtains required signatures when conducting controlled substance deliveries.
  • Assures effective exchange of unit-dose cassettes as per established schedules.
  • Maintains a safe, clean working environment.
  • Maintains stat box contents. Ensures posting of drug lists in the pharmacy, on the transfer carts, and at the patient care units.
  • Conducts monthly inspections of nursing stations, instructing nursing personnel when necessary to correct deficiencies, and retrieving medications not included on floor stock lists.
  • Assists the pharmacist in providing drug information and in profiling patient medications.
  • Conducts other professional functions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Completes all required documentation.
  • Performs all other Technician I and Technician II related functions.
