About the position

This position is a federal role that requires applicants to demonstrate sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties associated with the job. The hiring manager has the flexibility to consider applicants who are actively completing a required professional training program, provided they expect to complete it within six months of applying. The basic educational requirement includes a Bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited institution with courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics, along with completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by a recognized body. Alternatively, applicants may qualify through a full four-year course of study in medical technology or a combination of education and experience in clinical laboratory work. Specialized experience is required for different grade levels (GS-07, GS-09, GS-11), with specific examples of tasks and responsibilities outlined for each level.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis testing per published procedures.
  • Follow established procedures to perform quality control.
  • Use basic lab equipment/instruments such as microscope, centrifuge, and analyzers.
  • Perform specimen collection and phlebotomy procedures.
  • Conduct and evaluate molecular diagnostics testing in support of national public health reporting.
  • Review, evaluate, and advise on new laboratory testing to support clinical needs.
  • Evaluate methods to meet the requirements of particular testing situations.
  • Plan, implement, or monitor healthcare or laboratory programs/services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by NAACLS.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.
  • Certification/licensure as a medical technologist is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, or industrial medical laboratory.
  • Teaching, test development, or medical research program experience.
  • Advanced understanding of current scientific research and industry standards.
