About The Position

The PGY1 Resident Clinical Staff Pharmacist assists the Director in providing specialized pharmaceutical services to include advising physicians on matters pertaining to drug usage and control within assigned hospital locations; and participates in the development and delivery of pharmaceutical and clinical services and continuing education programs for Pharmacy, Patient Care Services, Medical staff and students/residents. This role involves providing specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes, mentoring pharmacy and medical students, maintaining liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff, conducting and evaluating medication histories, individualizing medication regimens, participating in pharmacy outpatient clinics, serving on patient safety and quality committees, and conducting research. Additionally, the resident will be responsible for performing duties required by the residency program director for accreditation and graduation. At times, the resident may be required to perform staff pharmacist duties, which include preparing and dispensing drug orders, ensuring safe and cost-effective drug therapies, monitoring drug regimens, compounding and dispensing pharmaceuticals, assisting with pharmacokinetics, reviewing culture and susceptibility data, detecting and reporting adverse drug reactions, sustaining the hospital drug formulary, providing clinical consultation, drug information, and patient education, documenting clinical activities, participating in quality improvement activities, supervising support personnel, and maintaining competency.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or Pharm.D.
  • Currently licensed or seeking licensure examination to practice pharmacy in the state of Ohio.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with pharmacy staff, hospital staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.
  • Ability to be mobile.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
  • Punctual attendance at assigned work location is required.
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner and maintain an accident-free work place.
  • Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of Medical Center emergency codes.
  • Ability to comply with OSHA regulations and CDC standard and transmission-based precaution recommendations.
  • Ability to utilize proper personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to comply with provisions of applicable S.D.S. forms.
  • Successful completion of a ninety (90) day probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes, including advising physicians on drug therapy, toxicity, side effects, and appropriate medications and doses.
  • Coordinate the activities of assigned pharmacy technicians in the preparation, labeling, and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Mentor Pharmacy Practice Students and Medical Students through practical and didactic experiences.
  • Maintain liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff, providing information on pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage, compatibility, and drug control regulations.
  • Conduct and evaluate medication histories, assess compliance, suggest modifications for desired outcomes, and instruct patients on proper drug use.
  • Make Patient Care Rounds with physicians to evaluate patient progress.
  • Individualize medication regimens based on pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles.
  • Participate regularly in pharmacy outpatient clinics.
  • Serve on hospital patient safety and quality committees.
  • Conduct and participate in research, potentially serving as a primary or co-investigator.
  • Perform duties required by the residency program director for accreditation and graduation.
  • Prepare and dispense drug orders accurately according to policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Compound and dispense pharmaceuticals, including sterile products, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition products.
  • Issue controlled substances and maintain required records.
  • Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness.
  • Assist with pharmacokinetics consult service and drug dosing.
  • Review and interpret culture and susceptibility data for antibiotic appropriateness.
  • Read, extract, and interpret information in patient charts.
  • Detect and report suspected adverse drug reactions.
  • Sustain the hospital drug formulary and promote rational drug therapy selection.
  • Provide clinical consultation and suggest cost-effective therapeutic alternatives.
  • Provide drug information to hospital professional staff.
  • Provide drug education to patients and their families.
  • Document all clinical activities and interventions accurately.
  • Participate in quality improvement and medication use review activities.
  • Supervise and direct pharmacy support personnel and verify their daily activities.
  • Participate in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel.
  • Complete medication storage area inspections and identify/replace outdated drugs.
  • Maintain competency required for the current job title/position.
  • Develop and implement initiatives for safe and cost-effective management of pharmaceuticals.
  • Develop, implement, and participate in residency requirements, clinical research projects, and scholarly activities.
  • Conduct in-depth research reviews of drug-related literature and make presentations on rational drug therapy.
  • Perform inventory control/purchasing activities as required.
  • Actively participate in the accomplishment and implementation of the pharmacy service’s scope of practice.
  • Type labels for medications and IV solutions.
  • Answer telephone, receive and relay messages.
  • Participate in department performance improvement activities and required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
