About The Position

The Perinatal Sonographer-Ob/Gyne performs comprehensive non-invasive, invasive, and vascular procedures to demonstrate OB/GYN anatomy. This role provides physiologic assessment of OB/GYN vasculature and fetal well-being, independently producing technically optimal, complete, and accurate images for diagnosis in high-risk OB/GYN patients. The sonographer summarizes findings, documents information for physicians, and assists physicians during invasive procedures. They are responsible for reviewing patient history, operating computer systems, and notifying physicians of findings. The position requires competent understanding and operation of ultrasound equipment, including start-up/shut down procedures, modifying technical factors, proper image labeling, and problem-solving for equipment malfunctions. Patient care is a key responsibility, including ensuring patient safety and comfort, explaining exams, reconfirming identification, maintaining positive customer relations, and displaying a professional manner. The sonographer must demonstrate competent understanding of patient positioning and image critique, performing problem-solving related to patient limitations and reviewing films to ensure completeness of exams. Participation in professional development is expected, including attending continuing education, maintaining accreditation, attending departmental meetings, and maintaining CME credits. Other duties include ensuring a safe environment, cleaning and sanitizing equipment, maintaining supplies, and providing technical support for the Ultrasound Department. This includes entering charges, communicating with other departments for scheduling, and potentially assuming a lead position in the absence of a supervisor. The role also involves assisting in the orientation of new personnel and answering telephones as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of AMA approved school of ultrasound.
  • 2 years OB/GYN experience.
  • Must become proficient in fetal echos within 1 year of hire date.
  • Good skills in OB/GYN and pelvic ultrasound exams.
  • Good skills in endovaginal scanning.
  • Good skills in OB/GYN color duplex scanning.
  • Good skills and knowledge of pathology in high risk OB/GYN imaging.
  • Requires good judgment, needs, reliability, responsibility, independent thought and action.
  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Perform emergency procedures as required.
  • Moving of equipment to bedside.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.
  • Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified in performing Nuchal Translucency within 6 months.
  • Attend additional in-services to keep up with 30 hours accreditation.
  • Attend annual in-services on fire safety, infection control to meet department safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provides physiologic assessment of OB/GYN vasculature and fetal well-being.
  • Independently provides technically optimal, complete and accurate images for diagnosis of the high-risk OB/GYN patient.
  • Combines clinical history while performing sonographic study to summarize findings of the study and upon completion of the study has the responsibility of documenting information/action to the appropriate physician.
  • Assists physicians during invasive procedures which include amniocentesis, sonohysterograms, endometrial biopsies, and chorionic villi sampling.
  • Reviews patient history by clinical information available from charts and one-on-one verbal review of clinical history with patient.
  • Summary of findings by imaging technologist must be entered onto the Perinatal computer network which requires advanced knowledge of operation of both computer hardware and software.
  • Notification of appropriate physician of summary of findings.
  • Reports any malfunctions to the manager. If manager is unavailable, contact proper company for repairs, if needed.
  • Able to perform start-up and shut down procedures on all equipment.
  • Ability to operate all ultrasound equipment in a competent manner.
  • Able to modify technical factors as situations warrants.
  • Ensures that images are labeled with patient identification properly.
  • Performs problem solving as situation warrants ie equipment malfunction, and physical limitations of equipment.
  • Handles all equipment with care.
  • Responsible for the welfare and care of all patients directly under their control; i.e. implementation of immobilization devices as necessary for patient safety and comfort.
  • Introduces self and explains exam to patient.
  • Reconfirms patient identification with the 2 patient ID and verified procedure requested.
  • Uses scripting when required.
  • Maintains positive customer relations including proper phone etiquette.
  • Professional manner must be displayed in relating to patients, physicians, family members, etc. at all times.
  • Ability to competently position patients for all ultrasound exams.
  • Perform problem solving as it relates to physical limitations of patient during patient positioning.
  • Competent to perform film reviews to determine if more views are necessary to complete the exam.
  • Has minimal amount of repeat work.
  • Attends continuing education seminars and keeps abreast of current literature.
  • Maintains professional accreditation in ARDMS and Nuchal Translucency certification.
  • Attends departmental meetings.
  • Maintains required amount of CME credits for ARDMS.
  • Participates in problem solving that would improve quality for the department.
  • Maintains CPR certification.
  • Provides directions and instruction to new staff, students, and staff in need of assistance.
  • Ensures a secure, safe patient and work environment by maintaining a continued awareness of safety hazard labels, pathology specimens, complete laboratory requisitions and deliveries to appropriate laboratory.
  • Cleans, prepares and sanitizes aspiration handles and endocavity transducers for invasive procedures and endovaginal/translabial imaging according to manufacturer recommendations and established infection controls.
  • Applies sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination to patients and instruments.
  • Maintains adequate supplies (gel, film, syringes) in US rooms and notifies manager if supplies are depleted.
  • Enters charges for completed procedures.
  • Communicates with other departments to successfully schedule various exams for the patient.
  • Assumes lead position as necessary in the absence of Lead Technologist and/or department supervisor.
  • Interacts closely with the Ultrasound Team Lead and department supervisor to provide for smooth daily operation of the department.
  • Attends regularly scheduled Ultrasound Department meetings and in-services.
  • Assists in orientation of Ultrasound Department personnel.
  • Helps in answering telephones, reviewing physician’s orders, as needed or other related duties as requested by department supervisor.
