About the position

The Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist position at Mercy is designed to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals experiencing changes in their speech, language, or swallowing functions. This role is integral to the organization’s commitment to supporting the Cedar Rapids community, having been a trusted provider for over 120 years. The position involves working with a diverse patient population, including cross-training to serve adult patients and participating in weekend rotations. The Speech-Language Pathologist will utilize current technology and techniques to deliver diagnosis, remediation, and consultative services, ensuring that patients can achieve the highest level of function possible within their abilities. In this role, the Speech-Language Pathologist will supervise students as needed and collaborate effectively with team members across departments to meet the goals and objectives of the speech therapy department. The position requires a commitment to maintaining a professional and courteous environment, demonstrating respect for all patients, families, visitors, and colleagues. Adherence to safety protocols, including Exposure Control Plans and participation in required safety training, is essential. The Speech-Language Pathologist will also be responsible for completing necessary documentation that reflects the care provided and the outcomes achieved, ensuring optimal patient care and communication within the clinical record. The ideal candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to function independently, and a solid understanding of medical terminology and computer systems. Continuous professional development and adherence to the highest standards in speech-language pathology are expected.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students as needed.
  • Utilize current technology, equipment, and techniques to provide speech, language, and swallowing services.
  • Provide diagnosis, remediation, and consultative services to a case-load of patients.
  • Promote effective working relations and work effectively as part of a team inter- and intra-departmentally.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees.
  • Follow Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
  • Attend all required safety training and describe responsibilities related to safety and job-related hazards.
  • Maintain and enhance personal knowledge and promote professional standards in speech-language pathology.
  • Complete all required paperwork following policies and procedures to ensure documentation reflects care provided and outcomes achieved.
  • Coordinate patient care with other team members ensuring optimal patient care and communication.

Requirements

  • Iowa state licensure or temporary licensure required at time of hire.
  • Iowa Permanent licensure required within 1 year of employment if have temporary licensure at time of hire.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
  • One year of experience preferred.
  • Demonstrate ability to function without close supervision.
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and medical terminology required.
