About the position

The Payroll Technician position at the City of Plant City involves responsible administrative work focused on analyzing, processing, and recording payroll-related financial transactions. The role requires ensuring compliance with federal regulations and city directives while maintaining employee payroll records and managing leave-time activities. The technician will handle complex tasks under pressure, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality in payroll processing and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Review, identify, analyze, and correct errors on time entry information before final processing.
  • Process weekly payroll and special employee payments, including pension payroll and workers compensation.
  • Prepare payroll checks, journal entries, and payroll reports, including Form 941, W-2, and Form 1095-C.
  • Process requests for payments related to IRS levies, child support, and employee garnishments.
  • Research previous payroll data and make necessary adjustments to maintain record accuracy.
  • Perform payroll system processing activities, including updating master record files and program updates.
  • Provide training assistance for time entry and payroll processing to other departments.
  • Participate in special payroll projects requiring research and analysis.
  • Compile and process annual City pension reports and maintain statistical reports.
  • Monitor employee annual and sick leave records and process personnel/payroll correspondence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field (preferred).
  • Three years of experience in payroll processing and automated payroll systems.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies related to payroll and employee benefits processing.
  • Considerable knowledge of automated payroll systems and personnel management regulations.
  • Skill in personal computing techniques and performing mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Ability to maintain confidential financial and personnel records.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation (highly preferred).
  • Experience with Munis payroll system.
