About The Position

Mapleton Public Schools is seeking a Payroll Specialist to assist with processing and distributing payroll accurately and efficiently according to federal and state laws and District policies. This role is crucial for ensuring timely and correct compensation for all employees. The Payroll Specialist will work within the Business Services department, reporting to the Director of Business Services and Payroll Manager. Mapleton Public Schools is an internationally accredited public school district committed to student success and providing diverse learning opportunities. We serve over 7,000 students across various small-by-design schools, focusing on rigor, relevance, and relationships.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in payroll processing.
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • Strong interpersonal relations skills.
  • Strong customer service and public relations skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Intermediate accounting and math skills and ability to perform salary/payout calculations.

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, Email, etc.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with ten-key adding machine.
  • Operating knowledge of Infinite Visions Software.
  • Mandatory Title IX training is required by the Colorado Department of Education and for all public school employees. Title IX training addresses harassment, discrimination, and bullying. Completing these mandatory Title IX training courses ensure we are meeting state requirements while continuing to foster a culture of safety and belonging across our schools. You will have two mandatory training courses that must be completed within 30 days of your date of hire and are required to be completed on your own time.

Responsibilities

  • Compute salaries for employees with changes in hours or positions; terminated; retiring; or on unpaid, medical, or maternity/paternity leave.
  • Serve as primary backup to the Payroll Manager.
  • Maintain records for all payroll deductions and benefits and reconcile and prepare reports for payment to agencies concerning all payroll benefits.
  • Maintain New Hire Report.
  • Receive and compute payroll time and attendance records, Claim for Payments, and 401(k) and 403(b) for semi-monthly payroll.
  • Balance before checks are printed, stuffed, and issued.
  • Monitor sick leave and vacation.
  • Communicate with insurance companies, IRS, State of Colorado, District employees, Human Resources, retired employees, and software company as deemed necessary to maintain accuracy of payroll matters.
  • Maintain and distribute garnishments, child support payments, and IRS tax obligations to proper courts and agencies.
  • Prepare information needed for auditors, including reports.
  • Provide tax records and insurance payment records and verification of sick leave and other leaves taken, comparing what schools turn into what is deducted.
  • Attend seminars on federal, state, and Social Security regulations pertaining to payroll, including Family Medical Leave Act, COBRA, Earned Income Credit, electronic funds transfer, Americans with Disabilities Act, etc.
  • Works cooperatively and maintains professional relationships with district employees and other professionals within specific areas of responsibility.
  • Attends staff meetings as required.
  • Performs other tasks as requested by supervisors.
