About The Position

The Patient Registrar position is a phone-based customer service role within the VCU Health Patient Appointment Center (PAC). This center handles all front-end scheduling and registration processes for VCU Health's ambulatory patient volumes. The Registrar is responsible for scheduling, registering, verifying pre-authorization and referrals, and confirming/maintaining patient diagnostic appointments, surgeries, and medical consultations. They accurately obtain necessary information for hospital and physician records, governmental requirements, billing, and third-party payers. The role also involves providing courteous and efficient service to patients and accurately documenting/verifying patient pre-registration information for the care team.

Requirements

  • Strong customer service skills and patient/customer-centered focus in a positive manner in all situations.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Ability to work daytime hours flexibly Monday - Friday between 7:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Ability to work hours past normal shift hours, as necessary, to resolve backlog or to contact patients for registration data.
  • Ability to concentrate/focus.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years previous experience with third-party medical insurance, HMO, and managed care.
  • Previous experience with CPT and ICD-10 coding.
  • Work experience using GE/IDX, Cerner.
  • Associate Degree in Business Management or closely related field from an accredited program.
  • Post high school education in healthcare or medical billing coursework.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules, registers, verifies pre-authorization and referrals, and confirms/maintains patient diagnostic appointments, surgeries, and/or medical consultations for VCUHS.
  • Accurately obtains required information for hospital and physician records, governmental requirements, billing, and third-party payer needs.
  • Provides courteous and efficient services to patients.
  • Accurately documents/verifies patient pre-registration information in a professional and timely manner with the care team.
  • Assists the VCUHS Patient Revenue Cycle Department with obtaining maximum and timely reimbursement.
  • Provides patients with appropriate information regarding VCUHS policy and procedures, and directs them to appropriate nursing units or ancillary service locations.
