About the position

The Patient Family Counselor (LCSW Therapist) at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago plays a crucial role in assessing and treating patients with physical disabilities resulting from traumatic injuries or illnesses. This position focuses on helping patients cope with the emotional impact of their disabilities through psychotherapy and behavioral management. The counselor will work collaboratively within a treatment team to provide comprehensive care, ensuring that patients and their families receive the necessary support and resources throughout their rehabilitation journey.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients, families, and other personnel to gather comprehensive patient history.
  • Provide consultation and therapeutic interventions for individuals, families, caregivers, and groups.
  • Engage in evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
  • Lead and co-facilitate psychoeducational groups.
  • Perform social evaluations, including family dynamics and risk assessments.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Educate interdisciplinary teams on cultural differences and communication styles.
  • Consult with treatment teams regarding psychological factors affecting rehabilitation programs.
  • Co-treat with allied health disciplines when emotional factors interfere with rehabilitation progress.
  • Provide discharge planning and follow-up services, including referrals.
  • Maintain patient documentation according to organizational requirements.
  • Deliver professional presentations as requested.
  • Assist with advanced directives and transitions to the next level of care.
  • Serve on various committees as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a hospital setting managing a patient family caregiver support caseload.
  • Prior experience in inpatient and/or outpatient rehabilitation settings preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills to solve complex administrative and clinical problems.
  • Interpersonal skills to motivate and provide direction, and to communicate effectively with all levels of management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with neurological and medically complex diagnoses such as TBI, stroke, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Familiarity with public service loan forgiveness programs.
