About the position

The position is responsible for facilitating communication between the nursing units and the Food Service Department regarding patient menus, diet changes, and general patient services. The role includes reading patient menus to patients twice daily, editing selections to meet dietary restrictions, and managing diet orders efficiently. Additionally, the position involves developing menu tallies for special requests and ensuring familiarity with dietary restrictions to optimize patient care and satisfaction. The individual will also assemble and deliver meal trays to patient rooms and nursing units, and may occasionally prepare salads, desserts, beverages, and other food items.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate between nursing units and Food Service Department regarding patient menus and diet changes.
  • Read patient menus to patients twice daily.
  • Edit patient selections to meet dietary restrictions associated with diet orders.
  • Organize and manage diet orders in a timely manner.
  • Develop menu tallies of special requests.
  • Ensure familiarity with dietary restrictions on special and modified diets.
  • React accurately to changes to ensure efficiency.
  • Assemble trays for patients and deliver meal trays to patient rooms and nursing units.
  • Prepare salads, desserts, beverages, and other food items as needed.
  • Assess age-specific safety issues related to food for different populations.
  • Exhibit communication skills to interpret age-specific responses.
  • Adhere to hospital and department policies on universal precautions and patient isolation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of modified diets and related restrictions.
  • Correct patient menus as prescribed by diet and preferences.
  • Communicate patient-related problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform diet office functions accurately and timely.
  • Compile patient census information and calculate food quantities required for tray service.
  • Take telephone messages and relay information appropriately.
  • Maintain office equipment and notify maintenance of repairs needed.
  • Follow sanitation procedures and maintain a clean working environment.
  • Identify and utilize cleaning chemicals safely and correctly.
  • Inventory and maintain necessary supplies for Food Service operation.
  • Adhere to medical center dress code.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months customer service or food service experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common diet modifications.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Current BLS card (CPR), with class provided upon hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six (6) months to one (1) year healthcare food service experience or two (2) years food service experience.
